Fantasy Blogosphere: April 18, 2010

We’ve got reviews of Mistborn, The Name of the Wind, and Leviathan this week, along with a great post over at SF Signal that features a great summary of quality sword & sorcery novels. GRRM fans should get ready to have scenes with Dani in the new A Game of Thrones HBO series shine as its rumored that they’re breathing life into the dothraki by creating a language to be used on the show. We’ve also found a few great author blog posts this week, from both Pat Rothfuss and Guy Gavriel Kay. And finally, check out the cool box set of art inspired by Stephen King novels.

Fantasy Blogosphere: April 11, 2010

A triage of interviews with heavy hitters this week: Jim Butcher, Guy Gavriel Kay and George R.R. Martin. The Martin interview is a podcast with boatloads of good content. We’ve also got a pair of reviews of Peter V. Brett’s work, as well as a post on one of my secret pleasures: epic fantasy comics. I’ve got graphic novel editions of Feist’s Magician and Martin’s Hedge Knight, so finding quality fantasy translated into comic form is always a fine hunt for me. We cap this week with a hilarious rant at The Rejectionist on my new favorite holiday: International Raistlin Majere Day. Enjoy.

Amazon’s Top 5 Fantasy Bestsellers, April 10, 2010

Dead Witch Walking goes from one to none as Jim Butcher’s Changes moves into the number one slot this week. I’ve got to tell you, it feels good to have one of the fantasy champs back in the top seat. I was reading another blog last week talking about how traditional fantasy seems to have dropped off the Amazon Fantasy list. Its true, and if this urban vampire trend continues for much longer, Amazon should really just create an “Urban Fantasy” category rather than lumping in all these books with girls with tramp stamps on their covers in the Fantasy category. Props to my man Jim Butcher!

  1. Changes by Jim Butcher
  2. Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris
  3. Black Magic Sanction by Kim Harrison
  4. Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs
  5. Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer

Fantasy Blogosphere: April 4, 2010

Do we have some golden eggs this week? I think so! Its Easter, and we’ve found reviews of books by Brandon Sanderson, Guy Gavriel Kay, Daniel Abraham and more. Also, check out an interview with George R.R. Martin and Daniel Abraham, and get GRRM’s most recent update on the 2011 Song of Ice & Fire calendar. Those calendars are so hard to find! I ordered my 2009 one on Amazon.com, only to receive an e-mail from Amazon three months into the year that they gave up trying to fill stock. Happy Easter!

And just for kicks this week (and to feature a video again, its been so long!), here’s some advice from your favorite super hero, Aquaman:

Book Release: Morticai’s Luck by Darlene Bolesny

Morticai's LuckThe first novel in the Duanor Series, a swashbuckling fantasy adventure.

Knives in the Night…

Welcome to the haunted, twin-mooned world of Duanor. Meet Morticai—reckless rogue, man of many names, ladies’ man, skilled gambler and believer in gods-given luck, expert bladesman, adept thief … and professional lawman.

The Droken, the bloodthirsty devotees of a sadistic, outlawed god, murdered Morticai’s parents, leaving him to survive alone as an unwanted corryn orphan on the meanest streets of Watchaven, a human city. Once a professional thief, he escaped the criminal underworld by joining the Northmarch, the kingdom’s elite paramilitary peacekeeping force. But even while honoring his peace officer’s oaths, he holds even stronger to his childhood vow to find and punish those who murdered his parents, and to oppose the works of Droka wherever he finds them.

Using his second-story skills from his past life, he discovers a nest of Droken that has infiltrated his own city and is commanded by powerful, nearly untouchable members of the nobility. His unofficial actions against them nearly cost him his life and his commission, but Morticai refuses to give up. Stubbornly following the lead, and aided by his loyal Northmarcher squad mates and a Knight of the Faith, he finds evidence of a shadowy conspiracy designed to embroil Watchaven and the corryn kingdom of Dynolva in a disastrous trade war that threatens to overwhelm not only Watchaven and Dynolva but all of the kingdoms, human and corryn, of Duanor.

It’s not the first time that Morticai has found himself in over his head … but it may be the last.

Fantasy Blogosphere: March 28, 2010

If you’re looking for a few good book reviews, you’ve come to the right place this week. I’d really like to check out Shadowrise and The Stormcaller when I find some time to fit them into my reading schedule. Also this week, a pair of interviews: video of Raymond E. Feist commenting on his 30 book series, his methods of character development, and how he feels fans have received his work over the years, as well as a transcript of an interview with the great Peter S. Beagle. We continue to follow the development of the Firefly comic series (solely because Patton Oswalt is hilarious), and we cap the week with news about Frank Frazetta and the family feud that has been surrounding his work for years.
