Westeros rules supreme this week as George R.R. Martin takes 4 out of 5 slots in the top 5 fantasy bestseller list on Amazon.com this week, the first time ever since I started tracking in 2009 that a single author has owned 4 books in the top 5. Charlaine Harris came close last year, with 3 out of 5, and ironically she’s the only non-Martin book that made the cut this week.

  2. Dead Reckoning (Hardcover) by Charlaine Harris
  3. A Clash of Kings (Kindle) by George R.R. Martin

Fantasy Blogosphere: January 7, 2011

The fantasy blogosphere onslaught continues this week, with reviews of books new and old alike, from The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin to A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin. Interviews with Brandon Sanderson and Ursula K. Le Guin crossed this week, and we see releases from top authors Tad Williams, Joe Abercrombie and more. More buildup for the Game of Thrones HBO series with a spotlight at the L.A. Times and a new “artisans” video hitting the web. Even further GRRM news with Bantam purchasing the comic book rights for A Song of Ice and Fire, and cap the week off with a trailer for the new Lord of the Rings video game!

Amazon’s Top 5 Fantasy Books, January 9, 2011

Its an epic/urban slugfest to kick off 2011, with two novels each by H.P. Mallory and George R.R. Martin making the top 5. In a hilarious contrast, we have novels from one of the best epic fantasy series in recent history sharing the top 5 with what has to be one of the cheesiest urban fantasy series ever, stealing its titles from Shakespeare. I’m really not sure which takes the cake: a novel titled “Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble, A Paranormal Romance”, or “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”, which we saw in the top 5 in 2010. Ricidulous. Anyway, definitely worth noting is the fact that all 5 novels in the top 5 this week are Kindle editions. Will we say goodbye brick and mortar stores in 2011?

  1. Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble, a Paranormal Romance (Kindle) by H.P. Mallory
  2. A Game of Thrones (Kindle) by George R.R. Martin
  3. Toil and Trouble, a Paranormal Romance (Kindle) by H.P. Mallory
  4. Out of the Black (Kindle) by Lee Doty
  5. A Clash of Kings (Kindle) by George R.R. Martin

Fantasy Blogosphere: June 27, 2010

The cover for Gail Z. Martin’s The Sworn was released this week, and we’ve got a great mix of reviews, from Terry Brooks’ latest to a pair of Adrian Tchaikovsky novels, to the Swords and Dark Magic compilation. We’ve also located an interview with George R.R. Martin’s editor who discusses her work on A Clash of Kings. Topping off this week is our first mention of eReaders in the fantasy blogosphere, and it comes in the form of Ray Kurzweil offering a solution to books that get mangled by current eReader software.

Fantasy Blogosphere: January 24, 2010

If our last Fantasy Blogosphere post was the most eclectic yet, then this is the most abundant. Chock full of review goodness, this post features reviews of books by Robin Hobb, David Anthony Durham, Ken Scholes, George R.R. Martin, Guy Gavriel Kay, Daniel Abraham, James Barclay and Terry Pratchett, and a triage of Jim Butcher reviews from NextRead. Pat’s got a fresh interview with Joe Abercrombie, and there’s exciting news all around; its looking like we’re really going to see A Game of Thrones as an HBO series, R.A. Salvatore signs for 6 additional Forgotten Realms books, and the movie rights for Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn trilogy have been optioned. What a great time to be a fantasy fan!
