Fantasy Blogosphere: August 22, 2011

Interviews galore this week, featuring everyone from old hands like R.A. Salvatore and Neil Gaiman, to relatively fresh talent like Lev Grossman and Mark Charan Newton. A couple of Game of Thrones scripts set for charity auction were heisted this week, and we get a first look at the new free MMO based on Tad Williams’ Otherland. It looks absolutely sick.

Fantasy Blogosphere: October 31, 2010

A fairly calm week in the fantasy blogosphere, with only one review of note crossing the wire. Naomi Novik swings by The Dragon Page, and R.A. Salvatore chats with Del Rey. Barnes & Noble released a full color, Android-based Nook this week, which will fill the slot between cheaper e-ink readers and the full-featured iPad starting at $500. The new Nook has a great price point, starting under $300 around $250. The Hobbit movie is officially staying in New Zealand, and check out the footage from the lead costume designer for the new HBO Game of Thrones series.

Holy schnikes! Where to begin this week? How about reviews of books by Tad Williams, Mark Chadbourn, Mark Charan Newton, Paul Hoffman, and Jo Graham? Or maybe interviews with R.A. Salvatore, Guy Gavriel Kay and Naomi Novik? Not to your liking? Try The Way of Kings tour schedule, Stephen King’s The Dark Tower becoming a film trilogy and a tv series and the babes of Dragon*Con on for size. Still not happy? Will a new trailer for Towers of Midnight please you? No? Ok, then check out The Guide to Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction, answer the question of what hobbits, robots and yahoos have in common, and check out The Guild: Season 4, Episode 8. Thirsty for more? Well, you’ll have to look elsewhere, I’m spent.

Great reviews of Dragon Keeper and Tongues of Serpents this week, followed by interviews with Brent Weeks, Peter V. Brett, Neil Gaiman, Tracy Hickman, and more. A few interesting moves in the eBook industry this week as well. Finally, I can’t believe Neil Gaiman is about to start receiving royalty checks for my favorite comic book hero.

Kick off the weekend with a slew of great reviews, spanning great fantasy novels like Imager’s Intrigue by L.E. Modesitt, Jr., a review of Joe Abercrombie’s entire trilogy, The First Law, to a review of a compilation edited by Neil Gaiman. Interviews aplenty this week as well, with some great names like David Drake, Naomi Novik, and others. Wrapping it all up is an update from George R.R. Martin on the casting, production team and film locations for the HBO series Game of Thrones.

Amazon’s Top 5 Fantasy Bestsellers, August 1, 2009

The Time Traveler’s Wife catapults into first from fifth last week.  Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Apprentice stays strong in the number two slot, and the rest of the top five are the same batch, just rearranged slightly.

  1. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
  2. Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb
  3. Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4) by Stephenie Meyer
  4. Sookie Stackhouse, Books 1-7 by Charlaine Harris
  5. His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik

Its interesting that Margaret Lindholm’s first novel published under the pen name Robin Hobb, from 1995, is maintaining such a strong showing in Amazon’s top five.  No doubt caused by popularity of recent books, readers are feeling compelled to go back to the start of the 9 books preceding the forthcoming The Dragon Keeper.  I chose to start with the middle trilogy, since I’ve heard its the strongest of the three trilogies.  Have you read any other books by Robin Hobb?  Leave a comment, it doesn’t require signing up.
