Amazon’s Top 5 Fantasy Books, January 9, 2011

Its an epic/urban slugfest to kick off 2011, with two novels each by H.P. Mallory and George R.R. Martin making the top 5. In a hilarious contrast, we have novels from one of the best epic fantasy series in recent history sharing the top 5 with what has to be one of the cheesiest urban fantasy series ever, stealing its titles from Shakespeare. I’m really not sure which takes the cake: a novel titled “Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble, A Paranormal Romance”, or “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”, which we saw in the top 5 in 2010. Ricidulous. Anyway, definitely worth noting is the fact that all 5 novels in the top 5 this week are Kindle editions. Will we say goodbye brick and mortar stores in 2011?

  1. Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble, a Paranormal Romance (Kindle) by H.P. Mallory
  2. A Game of Thrones (Kindle) by George R.R. Martin
  3. Toil and Trouble, a Paranormal Romance (Kindle) by H.P. Mallory
  4. Out of the Black (Kindle) by Lee Doty
  5. A Clash of Kings (Kindle) by George R.R. Martin

Amazon’s Top 5 Fantasy Bestsellers, December 26, 2010

Towers of Midnight gets knocked completely out of the top 5, in perhaps the most significant shift in recent months: all books in Amazon’s top 5 are Kindle editions, for the first time I’ve ever seen it happen. Replacing hardcover editions of popular current novels like Towers of Midnight and World War Z are Kindle versions in some instances of the same books (World War Z), and in others Kindle editions of classics (The Lord of the Rings). Also, The Hobbit was just outside the top 5, coming in at number 6, also a Kindle edition.

  1. A Game of Thrones (Kindle) by George R.R. Martin
  2. World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (Kindle) by Max Brooks
  3. The Lord of the Ring (Kindle) by J.R.R. Tolkien
  4. Moon Dance (Kindle) by J.R. Rain
  5. Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble, a Paranormal Romance (Kindle) by H.P. Mallory

Fantasy Blogosphere: April 18, 2010

We’ve got reviews of Mistborn, The Name of the Wind, and Leviathan this week, along with a great post over at SF Signal that features a great summary of quality sword & sorcery novels. GRRM fans should get ready to have scenes with Dani in the new A Game of Thrones HBO series shine as its rumored that they’re breathing life into the dothraki by creating a language to be used on the show. We’ve also found a few great author blog posts this week, from both Pat Rothfuss and Guy Gavriel Kay. And finally, check out the cool box set of art inspired by Stephen King novels.

Fantasy Blogosphere: March 7, 2010

Four reviews kick off our fantasy blogosphere roundup this week, with reviews of books by Tad Williams, Joe Abercrombie, Ian C. Esslemont and Seressia Glass.  Following this is the fantastic news that HBO has approved A Game of Thrones, so we’ll be seeing something more than a static image soon. A few covers were released this week, for Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings, and Brent Weeks’ The Black Prism. Check out the interview with Brandon for his comments on his new series. I’m not sure I’m into the new photo realistic cover as exhibited on Weeks’ novel; we’ll have to keep an eye on this and see if it becomes a trend. And last but not least, some sort of explanation as to why Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter made the Amazon top 5 yesterday.
